What is ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca: Composition, origin, effects and legality in Brazil

Ayahuasca is a traditional, psychoactive plant brew from South American medicine, used for centuries by indigenous peoples of the Amazon. It serves spiritual, religious, and healing purposes and is now one of the best-known ritual plant medicines worldwide. The combination of selected plants induces profound introspective experiences that are often described as transformative.
What is Ayahuasca? – Composition and effects
The ayahuasca brew consists essentially of two plants: 1. Banisteriopsis caapi – a liana rich in harmala alkaloids (MAO inhibitors). 2. Psychotria viridis or Diplopterys cabrerana – leaves containing DMT (dimethyltryptamine).

The harmala alkaloids from the vine prevent the DMT from being broken down immediately in the body. This allows it to exert its full effect and leads to a trance-like state of consciousness. The combination of both plants is unique and makes ayahuasca one of the most potent entheogenic brews in the world.
Traditional use
Ayahuasca has been used since ancient times by ethnic groups throughout the Amazon region – in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. Its preparation and use are deeply rooted in their culture and are carried out in ritual ceremonies that promote spiritual insights, healing, and a connection with nature.

In Brazil, ayahuasca is also used in several recognized religious communities, such as: • União do Vegetal (UDV) • Santo Daime • Barquinha
These religions have state-guaranteed rights to use ayahuasca, which is unique worldwide.
Regional distribution
Although ayahuasca originated in the Amazon basin, it has since spread worldwide. Brazil is now considered one of the most important centers for safe, legal, and professional ayahuasca ceremonies.
Is ayahuasca legal in Brazil?
Yes.
Brazil is one of the few countries in the world where the use of ayahuasca is completely legal – both religiously and spiritually – within clearly defined guidelines. The Brazilian government has officially recognized ayahuasca as a sacramental plant-based beverage since 1987. Its production adheres to strict quality standards. In Brazil, ayahuasca is not produced synthetically or sold on the black market, but rather by authorized groups that prioritize purity, sustainability, and safety.
This makes Brazil one of the most reputable countries in the world for an ayahuasca experience.
